There's no shortage of excellent reasons why over 150 million people a year choose to visit zoos and aquariums in the United States.
Some of them are looking for a pleasant outing in an idyllic park-like setting with family and friends. Others are seeking the enjoyment of bringing storybook characters to life in the eyes of their child. Some visit out of scientific curiosity and a desire to learn. Photo opportunities attract the camera crowds. Stress relief and the exercise of walking are additional motivators!
But the simple truth is that the opportunity to get up-close with living, breathing animals is an amazing experience - AND one that can be had as an easy day trip from the Greenwich area via a visit to Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo (just over 30 minutes from downtown Greenwich)!
About Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is one of Connecticut’s top family attractions. Spend an hour or the whole day and see more than 300 animals representing primarily North and South American species. Learn about their many endangered and threatened species, which include the Amur (Siberian) tiger, Andean condor, Ocelot, Red wolf, Maned wolf, Giant Anteater and Golden lion tamarin. Grab a bite at the Peacock Café, enjoy an outdoor lunch in the Picnic Grove and take a ride on their colorful carousel.
With a proud history of over 90 years as Connecticut’s only zoo, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is also an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and a participant in its Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs. This means they are committed to the preservation of endangered animals and are actively developing strategies that will protect species and preserve their wild habitats.
Through education, conservation, research and recreation, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo provides a wonderfully wild experience for students and families.
What are some of the exciting things I can see at Conncticut's Beardsley Zoo?
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has experienced an exciting baby boom of endangered animals, with the birth of three critically-endangered maned wolf pups (Chrysocyon brachyurus) in December 2017, adding to the two Amur tiger cubs (Panthera tigris altaica), born in November 2017. Today all five young animals are out on exhibit, the three maned wolf pups with their parents, and the two Amur tiger cubs in a separate tiger habitat from the adult tigers.
As an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited Zoo, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for both Amur tigers and maned wolves. The SSP program pairs genetically significant individuals to maintain a viable, self-sustaining captive population, enhance the health and wellbeing of individuals living in zoos, and promote conservation through education and field conservation initiatives.
The female maned wolf, Bonita, and male, Paulo, are devoted parents, and are rearing their pups as a family. Ten-year-old Amur tiger Changbai gave birth to four tiger cubs, although only two survived. The two surviving cubs, both females, were removed from Changbai when she showed no interest in taking care of them. Both cubs were raised for the first few months of their lives in the Zoo’s Health Care Center. Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is home to both parents, a male, Petya, and Changbai, who joined the Zoo family last winter.
