Greenwich Crew Women’s Youth Lightweight 8+ won the Gold Medal and their 2nd consecutive National Title in their boat class at the US Rowing Youth National Championships this past Sunday. Congrats girls!!!

This past weekend, in hot and humid conditions in Sarasota, Florida, 7 boats from Greenwich Crew participated in the 2019 USRowing Youth National Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida.

The USRowing Youth National Rowing Championships is the premier youth rowing event in the United States – and this year’s event was no exception.

Over four days at the Championship regatta, approximately 1500 athletes representing some 150 teams from across the nation competed for the national title in 18 different events. Once again, the Greenwich Crew Team came through in a big way!

For the second consecutive year, the Womens Lightweight 8+ won the gold medal in their event. The boat consisting of Lydia Garnett (coxswain), Elle Krywosa, Sophia Gilroy, Darby Loveless, Allison Millspaugh, Madelyn Brody, Lillian Johnson, Harley Marks, and Brooke Legenzowski followed up their resounding 10-second victory in the semifinal qualifying heat with a 4-second victory, leading the final race from start to finish, over boats from powerhouse programs Marin (CA) and Sarasota (FL).

Not to be outdone, the Womens 8+ crewed by Merideth Lundberg (coxswain), Lucy Koven, Isabel Wilkowski, Natasha Neitzell, Jessica Hooper, Ellarie Talgo, Olivia Schnur, Katherine Turk, and Alexa Zavatarro also repeated their performance from the previous year, once again earning the silver medal in their event, finishing just a few seconds behind rival Saugatuck, who won the Womens 8+ event for the 5th consecutive year.

The Greenwich Crew success did not end here however.

For the first time in program history, the Mens 8+ with Alexander Chung (coxswain), Michael Steinthal, Matt Phillips, Ted Frascella, Peter Scott, Will Wright, Quinten Cohen, Duncan Cavanaugh, and Sam Terry earned a place on the medal podium finishing in 3rd place in their event edging Capital Rowing (Sacramento, CA), after a tight battle right to the finish line, by less than 4/10ths of a second and finishing only seconds behind the gold medal crew from neighboring RowAmerica Rye (NY) and the silver medal finisher, and defending champion in the event, Sarasota Crew (FL).

Greenwich Crew continued the team’s success in the “B” Finals (to determine places 7-12) with the Womens 4+ (Christina Minyo (coxswain), Anna Meurer, Chloe Segal, Anna Brause, Emma Simpson) placing 8th in the nation after a great come from behind performance and the Mens Lightweight 8+ (Summit Gillespie (coxswain), Quentin Bazar, Zachary Hatzis, Ronan Mazaud, Trent Boone, Michael Walding, Jacob Millspaugh, Mark Razanau, Charlie Ellis) which finished 11th overall after an incredibly close finish with Gonzaga (WA), Miami Rowing (FL), and Newport (CA).

Rounding out the Greenwich teams were the Womens Lightweight 4+ (Victoria Fu (coxswain), Lillian Adamo, Abigail Lucier, Alexandra Wilkowski, Jenna Brendel) which placed 14th and the Mens Youth 4+ (Will Quinlan (coxswain), Mark Lorenz, Noah Brehm, Owen Lee, Ryan Bucaria) which placed 19th in a very strong field.

This year’s success would not have been possible without the leadership of the Greenwich Crew coaching staff – Heidi Hunsberger and Catherine Starr on the women’s side and Cary Wasserman, Mike Lachant and Rob Montague on the Men’s – all of whom did an amazing job of coaching these athletes all season long.

Congrats to all of these talented Greenwich rowers and coaches!
