Greenwich Crew

SOME BIG LOCAL NEWS: The Greenwich Crew Women’s Youth Lightweight 8+ won the Gold Medal and National Title for their boat class at the US Rowing Youth National Championships this past Sunday. Congrats girls!!!

This past weekend, under sunny skies and near perfect conditions, 6 boats from Greenwich Crew participated in the 2018 USRowing Youth National Championships on Lake Natoma in Gold River, CA – the premier youth rowing event in the United States.

Over the three days of the Championships approximately 1500 athletes representing some 150 teams from across the country were vying for national titles in 18 different boat classes. And the Greenwich Crew teams did not disappoint!

The Gold Medal winning Women’s Youth Lightweight 8+ (Molly Lundberg (coxswain), Alexa Zavattaro, Katie Turk, Madelyn Brody, Abby Lucier, Darby Loveless, Margaret Terry, Erin Meador and Sophia Gilroy) paced the Greenwich Crew teams with their wire to wire win. Their boat was the fastest on the course amongst its peers for all three days of the competition – fastest in the time trial qualifier, fastest boat in the semi-final heats and again, and most importantly, the fastest boat (by a fraction over 4 seconds) in the A Final for the Gold Medal and National Title for their class!

Greenwich Crew’s success did not end here however. The Women’s Youth 8+ (Ellie Leites (coxswain), Isabel Wilkowski, Natasha Neitzell, Amanda Pyne, Lucy Koven, Sophie de la Sierra, Daisy Devore, Camille Boylan and Ellarie Talgo) showed great form all weekend and placed second overall claiming the Silver Medal behind local club and national powerhouse Saugatuck Rowing Club who won their 4th consecutive Women’s 8+ title.

Not to be outdone – the Greenwich Crew boys got in the mix with the Men’s Youth 8+ (Summit Gillespie (coxswain), Trent Polkinghorne, Michael Steinthal, Peter Scott, Ted Frascella, Nico Matejak, Stanley Mason, Chris Stitch and Ethan Boone) reaching the Men’s A Final for the very first time and placing 5th overall after a very tight race versus rowing powerhouses Sarasota Crew (FL), Newport Aquatic Center (CA) and Oakland Strokes Inc. (CA).

The Men’s Youth 4+ (Alex Chung (coxswain), Sam Bickham, Noah Brehm, Matt Phillips, and Will Wright) surprised many competing teams with their strong performance as they powered their way to a 3rd place finish in the B Finals and a 9th place finish overall.

Rounding out the Greenwich teams were the Men’s Youth Lightweight 8+ (Bo Pollio (coxswain), Sam Terry, Zack Hatzis, Quentin Bazar, Jack Meinen, Kevin Phillips, Mark Lorenz, John Callahan and Alex Khan) which finished 12th overall and the Womens Youth 4+ (Carys Hacker (coxswain), Cameron Thibault, Ellie Dabney, Lexi de la Sierra, and Anna Meurer which finished 2nd in the C Finals Saturday and 14th overall.

This year’s success would not have been possible without the leadership of the Greenwich Crew coaching staff – Heidi Hunsberger and Catherine Starr on the women’s side and Cary Wasserman, Mike Lachant and Rob Montague on the Men’s who did an amazing job of coaching these athletes all season long.

Congrats to all these talented Greenwich rowers and coaches!!
