Jorge Acosta has been teaching soccer in Greenwich for the Mickey Kydes Soccer Program since 1997. When he started here, he noticed that after every season a good amount of gently used uniforms, balls, cleats, and other gear are discarded. Jorge knew that children in his hometown in Colombia, South America would absolutely love to have this equipment.
So Jorge took it upon himself to gather up the equipment at the end of each season and personally bring it to the children back home in Barranquilla, Colombia. He’s made the trip every year since 2003.
You can see the pictures of grateful teams (below) with their “Thank You OGRCC” and “Thank You Westport Soccer” signs.
Last year he brought over 300 pairs of soccer shoes for the children along with soccer balls and uniforms. Jorge tells the story of one boy who thanked him with tears in his eyes for a pair of goalie gloves and shirt. On a return trip, 3 years later, the same boy came up to Jorge and showed him he still had the gloves and uniform and repeated how much the gift had meant to him. With your help, Jorge will continue to make a difference.
