California Here We Come!
CONGRATULATIONS to Greenwich Crew as both Men’s and Women’s Teams are Victorious at Northeast Youth Rowing Championships! Team heads to the Youth National Championships with a record number of boats
This past weekend, May 19-20, the Northeast Youth Rowing Championships were held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts. Over 2,000 rowers representing some 48 teams braved the rainy and at times downright unhospitable weather Saturday (and slightly better weather Sunday) for a chance to qualify for a coveted spot in the 2018 USRowing Youth National Championships regatta June 8-10 on Lake Natoma in Gold River, California.
Greenwich Crew did not disappoint their many fans and supporters that made the trip north. Led by gold medal finishes by the Women’s Lightweight 8+, Women’s Youth 8+ and Men’s Youth 8+; silver medal finishes by the Men’s Lightweight 8+; and bronze medal finishes by both the Men’s and Women’s Youth 4+ boats the Greenwich Crew rowing teams rocked the Northeast Youth Rowing Championships – dominating the racing and winning the regatta’s Overall Points Trophy for the very first time!
The women’s team won the Women’s Team Point Trophy for the second consecutive year winning 9 medals (5 Gold, 2 Silver, 2 Bronze) in total.
However, the most significant win for the Greenwich ladies was their 9 second margin of victory in the Women’s Youth 8+ race over perennial powerhouse and reigning national champions Saugatuck Rowing Club. Way to go girls!!
On the men’s side, the racing was just as competitive as the Greenwich men’s team tried to take down their nemesis (and last year’s NE Regional Men’s Points Trophy winner) Community Rowing Inc. of Boston (CRI) and claim the Men’s Points Trophy for Greenwich as well.
As the clouds parted and the winds calmed the anchor boat of the Greenwich Men’s team, the Youth 8+, had one of their best races of the year setting the course record for the weekend and besting CRI and Saugatuck by over 4 seconds to claim the gold medal in their heat!
Furthermore, once “the dust had settled” and the last of the men’s boats were off the water, it was revealed that Greenwich had won 8 medals (1 Gold, 4 Silver, 3 Bronze) and narrowly secured its very first Men’s Team Points Trophy defeating (again) perennial northeast powerhouse CRI.
Greenwich Crew will now be sending a record 6 boats to compete in the US Rowing Youth National Championships to race for a national title. For more information about the National Championship races and live streaming options (so that you can follow your favorite rower) please see the link below.
