About the Greek Summer Program

Greece is a country in exciting transition. Through the American Farm School’s Greek Summer Program, high school students looking for a meaningful experience abroad can play a transformative role in a local community and change the course of their own lives in the process.

Greek Summer is 4-week service learning and cultural immersion program, where young men and women ages 15-17 years old come together to discover and engage in an impactful service learning activity in a historically, culturally, and environmentally rich setting. This exciting program combines service learning with an introduction to Greek language, culture, and current issues – from the importance of food and agriculture in the local economy, to social issues related to refugees, peace, and conflict resolution. Participants gain a holistic view of the Greek experience, broaden their perspectives, and expand their horizons.

The homestay is the program’s core experience. Participants live as members of a rural family where they work together to complete a needed community service project. Preparation for village life includes an introduction to the Greek language, local traditions, current issues and more.

The “Big Trip” reveals Greece’s amazing diversity while participants explore cultural and historic sites throughout the country. Eco-adventures in breath-taking settings include trekking Mt. Olympus, sailing pristine bays, and discovering island communities. Hands-on activities at the host campus of the American Farm School give students an understanding of sustainable food systems and the importance of food and agriculture to the culture and economy of the region. They will become global citizens at a time when the world is in desperate need of engaged thinkers willing to take independent and responsible initiative to make the world a better place.

Greek Summer Testimonials:

"For a month, I enjoyed blue waters, ancient ruins, and the company of the most loving, friendly people I have ever known. The bonds I made with the people in the program and with the Greek villagers through the community service opportunity was what made this program unforgettable. I recommend this program to anyone who wants to experience every aspect of Greek life."

“Greek Summer was a totally eye-opening experience. In Greece, I met people who had a level of kindness I could only have dreamed of. The program itself still affects me today, as there is hardly a day I go without thinking about Greece. Greek Summer pushes your limits, expands your boundaries, and causes you to fall in love with one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It also teaches you to come into yourself, and develop and understand who you are as a person. This was perhaps one of the most valuable parts of the experience for me personally. All seriousness aside, it was also a fabulous time. I can think of very few places I would rather be than with 18 of my closest friends in Greece.”

“The memories I made during AFS Greek Summer have stayed with me since I participated in the program two summers ago. My sister went last summer and we shared the same host family who we continue to stay in touch with to this day! The experience brings an abundance of cultural awareness, lasting friendships, and incredible opportunities. Now in college, experiencing Greek Summer has boosted my resume and made me excited to eventually study abroad. I highly recommend this program to anyone looking to experience an exciting summer full of adventure!”
