Welcome to the 2021 Living Greenwich Independent School Guide - Fall Edition - a trusted resource for Greenwich-area parents seeking in-depth information on the best independent schools and programs available for their children.
What are some of the benefits of choosing an independent school?
There is a wide diversity among independent schools, allowing you to find a school with an innovative and exciting curriculum that is an excellent fit for your child. Whether co-ed or single sex, day school or boarding school, religious or not religiously affiliated, each independent school is driven by its own unique philosophy, values, and approach to teaching.
Independent schools have high academic standards, nurture intellectual curiosity, stimulate personal growth, encourage critical thinking, and promote a lifelong love of learning. Outside of the the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in school-sponsored athletic endeavors, artistic pursuits, and leadership experiences.
Independent schools attract exceptional teachers who usually teach in their areas of expertise and are passionate about developing a full understanding of each student’s learning style, interests, and motivation. Plus class sizes tend to be smaller and low student/teacher ratios foster valuable connections between instructors and students.
Independent schools also cultivate an environment of regular (and open) communication among students, parents, and teachers to ensure everyone is working toward the same goals.
Where to begin? Take the time to mindfully peruse our 2021 selection of Independent Schools. The respected institutions showcased here are certain to open your mind to the wide array of curricula, opportunities, benefits, and possibilities available to families who choose to begin their child on path towards the superior educational programs these Independent Schools have developed. We strongly suggest taking the time to read the full details for each Independent School - and clicking through to their actual websites - in order to get an informed sense as to the actual spectrum of academic offerings and extracurricular activities furnished by each featured listing.

Stoneleigh-Burnham School (SBS), an independent day and boarding school in Greenfield, Massachusetts, attracts girls in grades 7-12 from more than 15 states and more than a dozen countries.
Founded in 1869, SBS is known for its powerful academics, as well as its debate and public speaking, performing and visual arts, athletics, and equestrian programs. It is the first girls’ boarding school in New England to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and 100% of its seniors are accepted to college year after year.
As part of its commitment to make education accessible to more families, SBS reduced its day tuition by upwards of 40% in 2020. The following year, the School significantly decreased boarding tuition. SBS’s new tuition rates position them at the forefront of an important trend in independent school education and their boarding tuition is now approximately 10% lower than the national average boarding school tuition.
SBS is an academic community with an international perspective. The School inspires girls to pursue meaningful lives based on honor, respect, and intellectual curiosity. Each student is challenged to discover her best self and graduate with the confidence to think independently and act ethically, secure in the knowledge that her voice will be heard.
